Born as Harvey Forbes Fierstein on June 6, 1954, Harvey Fierstein is an American actor, playwright, and voice actor.
He has won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his own play Torch Song Trilogy, and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.
He also won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, for a book he wrote for the musical La Cage aux Folles. In 2007, he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.

Fierstein is best known for the play and film Torch Song Trilogy, which he wrote and starred in both Off-Broadway (with a young Matthew Broderick) and on Broadway (with Estelle Getty and Fisher Stevens).
In 2007, he wrote the book to the musical A Catered Affair in which he also starred. After tryouts at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September 2007, it opened on Broadway April 17, 2008, and closed on July 27, 2008. Fierstein received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Book of a Musical, and the show won the Drama League Award for Distinguished Production of a Musical.
He wrote the book for the stage musical Newsies, along with Alan Menken (music) and Jack Feldman (lyrics). It opened on Broadway in March 2012. Fierstein was nominated for the Tony Award for Book of a Musical.

She is the wife of Wilbur Turnblad and the mother of protagonist Tracy Turnblad. She is ashamed of her weight and appearance, which over the years leads to her refusing to leave her home.
Her daughter Tracy decides Edna should be her new agent, taking her to Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway to strike a contract and while there, Edna is treated to a makeover and begins to embrace herself more. Motormouth Maybelle manages to convince Edna that being big, pretty and beautiful.

In the film, Independence Day, Fierstein played Marty Gilbert. Marty was the manager of Compact Cable in New York City and a friend of his employee David Levinson.
He was known for his perpetual state of high anxiety and this is compounded by his stressful job of operations manager for one of the largest cable providers in America. During the War of 1996, Marty’s company was having trouble dealing with the interference appearing in every network television caused by the aliens’ arrival.
He quickly accosted David for his help to solve the problem; in which David reassure Marty that he could find a way to block the interference, thereby also allowing Compact Cable to be the only company broadcasting a clear picture in New York. He then expresses his enthusiasm by kissing David on the lips.
By the time David was cracking the interference’s codes, Marty and his employees were watching a broadcast about the strange phenomenon appearing in the skies. Upon learning one such phenomenon is heading for New York, Marty evacuated his employees into the building’s old bomb shelter before realizing to call his mother.
